Where Largo sits and how people get around
Largo is in the middle of the Pinellas peninsula, between Clearwater to the north, Pinellas Park to the south and Seminole to the southwest. It is the county's third-largest city, with about 82,617 residents in the latest Census estimates. The main roads are US 19 on the east side, Ulmerton Road and East Bay Drive running east to west, and Seminole Boulevard and Missouri Avenue on the west side.
Two airports are within reach: St. Pete-Clearwater International (PIE), close to the city's eastern edge, and Tampa International across the bay. The Gulf beaches at Indian Rocks Beach and Belleair Beach are a short drive west over the Intracoastal. The Pinellas Trail, the long paved bike and walking path that runs the length of the county, passes through Largo, and Largo Central Park and the Florida Botanical Gardens are both in the city.
Largo's boundaries are patchy. Many streets with a Largo mailing address are actually in unincorporated Pinellas County, which means different rules for permits, code enforcement and some utilities. Check which one applies to the exact address before you make an offer.

An unusual housing mix: one in four homes is a mobile home
Census data shows that only 29.5% of Largo's housing units are single-family detached houses. Another 26.1% are mobile or manufactured homes, and 23.6% sit in buildings with 10 or more units. Few Florida cities this size have so much of their stock in parks and condo complexes.
For a newcomer this matters in three ways. First, the citywide numbers mix very different products, so a $160,000 condo, a manufactured home in a park and a $500,000 pool home are all part of the same average. Second, a lot of the cheapest housing comes with monthly fees or lot rent, which belong in your budget from day one. Third, many parks and older complexes are age-restricted, so a family with kids will find the real choice narrower than the listing count suggests.
Who already lives in Largo
The median age in Largo is 49.3, and 28.0% of residents are 65 or older. About 10.7% of housing units are seasonal or occasional-use homes, which shows up as quieter streets in summer and fuller restaurants and parks from January to April. Working-age families do live here, mostly in the single-family subdivisions, and the city's central location keeps commutes to Clearwater, St. Petersburg and the Gateway office area manageable.
If you are moving with school-age children, look at single-family neighborhoods first and confirm the school assignment for the exact address with Pinellas County Schools, since zones do not follow city lines.
Storms, flood zones and the insurance bill
Largo sits inland from the Gulf, but parts of the city still fall into FEMA flood zones, especially near creeks, lakes and the low ground toward the Intracoastal. The flood zone is set address by address, so check it on the FEMA map before you fall for a house. If it is in an A zone and you finance, the lender will require flood insurance.
With a 1978 median build year, insurers will ask about the roof age, the electrical panel, plumbing and water heater through a 4-point inspection, and a wind mitigation report can lower the windstorm part of the premium. Get a real quote during your inspection period. Insurance is often the biggest surprise for people moving from states where it is a small line item.
Taxes and what newcomers usually get wrong
Florida has no state income tax. If Largo becomes your permanent home, the homestead exemption takes up to $51,411 off the assessed value in 2026 and Save Our Homes caps yearly assessment increases at 3% or the CPI. The assessment resets to market value when you buy, so the seller's tax bill is not a guide to yours.
The other mistakes I see most often:
- Assuming a Largo address means city services. Check city versus county.
- Comparing a park home's price with a house without adding the lot rent or HOA.
- Skipping the 4-point and wind mitigation inspections on an older house.
- Treating the condo drop as a bargain without reading the association's reserves and inspection reports.
If you tell me your budget and how you want to live, a shortlist of streets and buildings that fit is the logical next step.
Quick answers
Is Largo, FL a good place to live?
For buyers who want a central Pinellas location at a lower price, it often is. The typical home is about $335,649 on Zillow, below Clearwater and St. Petersburg, and you are a short drive from beaches, two airports and the Pinellas Trail. The trade-offs are older housing and a large share of mobile homes and condos with monthly fees.
How much do I need to buy a house in Largo?
Zillow's typical single-family value is about $369,638, and a 3-bedroom runs around $402,064. With 20% down on a $370,000 house you would bring about $74,000 plus closing costs.
Is Largo on the beach?
No. Largo is inland, but Indian Rocks Beach and Belleair Beach are a short drive west across the Intracoastal Waterway.
Does Largo flood?
Some areas do sit in FEMA flood zones, mostly near water and low ground. Check the flood zone for the specific address and get a flood quote before your inspection period ends.
